Upcoming search widget
We’re currently working on a new and more colorful search widget - and it’ll give you the option to choose your favorite search engines to appear in the list (Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Dictionary.com, Ebay, IMDB…). Please tell us what your favorites are, so that we can make sure as many of them as possible are included in the widget…

A friend and I both have Wikipedia and IMDB in our search boxes. Would love to see an Amazon search. Any idea if there is or will be a form of support group/forum for Protopagers? I read the messages posted here and have learned some from others’ Protopages, but it’d be nice to have a single source.
February 28th, 2006 at 4:14 pm
Google and Yahoo are my 2 choices. Rarely do I use Ask Jeeves, or MSN. IMDB would be nice, but not necessary.
February 28th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
I am frequently looking at new haircuts and would like a search facility for mullets, for instance trawling www.ratemymullet.com
February 28th, 2006 at 4:29 pm
I would really like to see Google Suggest in there
http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&complete=1
Many Thanks

I like the IMDB idea and it’d be nice to have a google image search if possible. But on a different note, it’d be nice to have a widget or something to post movie times?
February 28th, 2006 at 4:38 pm
I would like to see the various Google options available, such as Google Advanced, Google Images, Google Scholar, and Worldcat via Google etc.
February 28th, 2006 at 4:46 pm
It would be great to see a YubNub search (http://www.yubnub.org ). From YubNub, it is possible to use command-line calls to run all those other searches you listed.
February 28th, 2006 at 5:32 pm
Great! I will love if you add YubNub as default search engine. With this one you can have any other.
February 28th, 2006 at 5:32 pm
how about netflix
February 28th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
I would like those I have on my protopage (http://www.protopage.com/melland). Wikipedia, IMDb, and some norwegians. What about a opportunity to let the users add search engines, perhaps something like on firefox? Those I have on my protopage do I also have on firefox, but when I am on other computers then mine, with IE, it`s very nice to have them all on protopage.
February 28th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
I know you have dictionary.com listed, but in my FF keywords, I use m-w.com far more than dictionary. It seems to me that there is more information there…
February 28th, 2006 at 7:32 pm
I would like a pricewatch, Geek Articles, Digg and EBay seachbox, oh wait I all ready have one www.protopage.com/ssvalenteno
February 28th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
I would like to see About.com listed.
February 28th, 2006 at 9:05 pm
I like www.webcrawler.com as it searches all the good ones, like google, yahoo, excite, etc
February 28th, 2006 at 11:36 pm
I depend on and would like the all but forgotten Excite.com search engine available at the click of a mouse.
March 1st, 2006 at 2:22 am
I’m with Greg, I use metacrawler. It’s pwnage :)
March 1st, 2006 at 7:21 am
I currently have
google
Yahoo
wikipedia
would like del.icio.us
Love my protopage by the way, the email widget has been very useful addition so I can scan my gmail acccount from work to see if I have anything new prior to logging on.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:39 am
I added 3 search engines to my search list window:
Metacrawler
Previewseek
Twingine
The code follows:

I like most of the ideas - The IMDB would be my fave for an add.
March 1st, 2006 at 10:46 am
I’d love to see Google suggest, I’ve been trying to add it myself, but with no real success
March 1st, 2006 at 12:07 pm
Google, yes, but with all options (images, language support etc.)
March 1st, 2006 at 2:10 pm
I tend to use Google as my main search engine, but http://www.alltheweb.com/ it’s very useful and throws up stuff that Google doesn’t, it’s very good for info for my page at http://www.protopage.com/avfcfansforum
Just to add you’re doing a great job.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:43 pm
My only suggestion is to ensure that you cover countries other than the US of A - the choice to let me search Google or Ebay UK for example instead of being force-fed US results would be nice :-)
March 1st, 2006 at 9:27 pm
Links to Yahoo maps, mapquest, google maps, etc. would be great if they can accommodate zip/postal codes, or city names.
It took some work, but I eventually figured out how to get a link to mapquest where I would input a ZIP code and get a map of the area, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it with other map sites or for input parameters other than zip.
I also love the imdb idea! Thanks.
March 2nd, 2006 at 2:00 am
I use Protopage for a website for work, and I would love to see links for IMDb and Amazon. A friend actually rigged up a link to IMDb, but you guys might be able to do a better one. And please keep Wikipedia. Love this site, by the way!
March 2nd, 2006 at 10:17 am
second, third, or whatever for yubnub.
March 2nd, 2006 at 3:19 pm
Most of my faves have been mentioned, but I’d also like to suggest Answers.com, WebMD, and BitTorrent.
Thank you for making Protopage such a great service. I truly enjoy using it. :)
March 2nd, 2006 at 4:07 pm
How about a box to enter the search string and another to enter the url of the site you want to search? This way I could search for “Open Source” on say, http://www.mainlineinteractive,.com
So you have a search mod that allows you to set search string and where to search for it.
March 2nd, 2006 at 5:22 pm
www.dogpile.com
www.amazon.com
www.WIKIPEDIA.COM
If you can add more features to the calendar, such as entering upcoming appointments or events or meeting (na organizer), it’ll be awesome
Thanks
March 2nd, 2006 at 10:28 pm
It used to be Teoma, but now that has merged with Ask, so I guess: http://search.ask.com/

Hello I would Like to use protopage for a project can I?
March 3rd, 2006 at 6:30 am
IMDB.com
March 3rd, 2006 at 3:50 pm
Here is the html to do a zip search on mapquest, if anyone finds it useful. I doubt that this is the best way to do it, but it works:

Search engines?
Haven’t seen anyone mention A9.com yet…
I like lots of the suggestions; many I haven’t used in a while that if it was easy to use, I’d remember and use… if that makes any sense at all…
Great job, overall… You’re gonna make me a full-time convert real soon… ;-)
March 3rd, 2006 at 6:53 pm
Clusty!
March 3rd, 2006 at 7:44 pm
I currently have Google, IMDB, Wikipedia, and Dictionary.com on my search widget. In general, of course, the more options, the better! ;-)
March 3rd, 2006 at 8:09 pm
I use YubNub.com, which allows me to search wiki, google, imdb, etc. with commands.
March 4th, 2006 at 2:05 am
* Google Search
* Google Images
* Google Groups
March 5th, 2006 at 11:43 am
A9 first, then Google for geberal searches, eBay and IMDB for specialty stuff.
March 6th, 2006 at 8:47 am
I normally use Dogpile as my primary search engine since it uses all the others to create its list.
March 7th, 2006 at 8:33 pm
A reverse telephone number search.

I would like to see the option to search in Google but be able to choose the diferent internacional version. The same for ebay, it would be great to be able to choose between the .ca , .co.uk or .de ebay versions.
An offtopic: how about a calendar that could also act as PIM? ;)
March 8th, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Pretty cool. This will make some people happy. Im pretty happy with the way i have my search bars setup now though.
http://www.protopage.com/homelessbrian
let me know what ya think of my protopage layout.
The only real update im wishing for is better customization on the panels. I would love it if i had the ability to make them invisible etc… Keep up the good work folks!
March 9th, 2006 at 12:07 am
a whois and ip trace would be lovely.
And for searches, I would like to enter one search string and hit one or more search engines then have the results open in multiple tabs.
Yes, tabs. There should be an option to open all new windows in tabs rather than new windows (al la Firefox and IE 7.0).
You know, in your spare time ;o)
Thank you, btw, for the awesome work here; I’ve really grown to like Protopage quite a bit.
Many, many thanks!

I’d like to see a search widget for: http://digg.com
Everyone loves digg. right??
March 10th, 2006 at 10:21 am
I join Hayden Yale in asking for local search
March 11th, 2006 at 5:06 am
I second the digg.com nomination. Yes, everyone loves digg.
March 11th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
I really love you work on this site. It is getting better and better every time. My favourite search utilities are:
Google
Yahoo
Amazon
Wikipedia
Ebay
Now those below I really use them too, but they are from my home country, Brazil. So if you won’t even consider them, I will kind of understand you. There they go:
- Wikipedia (PT)
- MercadoLivre.com
- Submarino.com.br
- Americanas.com
- Buscapé.com.br
- Track and trace from www.correios.com.br
Keep up your excelent work!!!
Best regards from Brazil,
Leo Maia

Thx for ur explanations

March 12th, 2006 at 7:36 pm
post scriptum:
i tried to do it using a sticky post and it seems better but i cannot keep the orginal display of the source page
March 13th, 2006 at 2:32 am
737, you should check out http://www.protopage.com/widgetz. He has a variety of useful embeds and links, along with the HTML source to make them happen in your stickies.

Hi! I am trying to add Merriam-Webster in the search engines.
This does not work. Please correct this !!!!
March 14th, 2006 at 2:59 am
so I paste it here again with modification without
March 14th, 2006 at 3:04 am
This blog does not allow to input html codes.
March 14th, 2006 at 2:27 pm
As I can see many engines here..
I have an idea.
Why not use a Yubnub wrapper?
IE: in protopage made settings where you can put the yubnub start command and then when you search something, the widget will dispatch the entire yubnub request to yubnub server.
I use: gim ferrari
to search on Google Images for Ferrari images.
You should then add a new search engine with the command ‘gim’ in protopage, then when you search just for: ferrari in this search engine, will send ‘gim ferrari’ to the yubnub server.
Of course you will need to ask Jonathan Aquino if he will give you that permissions of usage.
March 20th, 2006 at 8:56 pm
I would love to see a search for Spurl.net. Ideally with the option to search just my spurls or everyone’s spurls. Actually, it might be nice if there were a dedicated Spurl widget that would allow search and/or display a tag cloud or something to allow easy access to all my bookmarks.
March 22nd, 2006 at 6:56 pm
You could include the list of options available for the toolbar search in Firefox.
March 27th, 2006 at 9:23 pm
Metacritic is a great site — please include it in the search engines widget. It’s a benchmark in the gaming industry and I use it regularly before buying any game or seeing any movie.
March 27th, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Oops — the url is www.metacritic.com
April 5th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
I’d love to see inclusion of the LEO dictionary at http://leo.dict.org.

How can I make the search menu come again ? I have once deleted it and I can’t find it again .. it is now cool !!
February 15th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
It is impossible to disable this feature, which is annoying. I bring up a new window and click in the google search that comes built into the browser… as I type protopage loads and then takes over with the onload/focus javascript. That ruins my browser search. When I delete all the search engines it just keeps coming back. Please allow us to delete this feature!!
March 17th, 2007 at 6:49 pm
Have you just finished your work? Just give me a short feedback. Jürgen
April 19th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
I want to ask the same a Jürgen before me. Are you finished with your work?
May 5th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Google, yes, but with all options (images, language support etc.)
May 5th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for about two years ago! I want it… will it work on WordPress 1.5.X? Please let me know!
December 28th, 2007 at 3:36 am
i tried to do it using a sticky post and it seems better but i cannot keep the orginal display of the source page
