Email inbox widget
You can now see a preview of your email inbox on your Protopage. The contents will automatically update every 5 minutes, unless you press the ‘check now’ button to force an immediate update.
This widget is compatible with Gmail, POP3 and IMAP mail providers. Unfortunately, Hotmail, Yahoo mail and other web-only email providers do not allow access unless you have a premium account with them – if you have such an account please follow their instructions for POP3 access and enter those details into the widget.
We have tested this widget with a number of email providers – please do write in if you have any particular troubles with your own email provider.
UPDATE:
Protopage will send your email password only once to our email indexing server – it does this only when you first register your inbox with Protopage. From then on – your email inbox is referenced by a special ID that is only valid if you are logged in to your Protopage. This prevents your password from being sent every time you load your Protopage, and as such protects you from someone using network security tools to see your password at a later date.

thank you. thank you. thank you.
You’re my teh hero.

Cool! Is there anyway to filter which messages are shown? How long are the intervals when it checks for new messages? I have a lot of mailing lists and other things that aren’t pertinent to know have arrived, but would like to explicitly see new mail that has arrived to is directly to me.

Looks neat. But is it secure? I prefer using SSL to check my POP mail.

Another terrific application that works very nicely! Well done, and keep up the great work! All the best, rhadamanthus.

I just check this today and find out the widget. Its very cool. I use protopage to make notes from work and then check them back home. Keep up the good work!!
February 14th, 2006 at 11:44 pm
Awesome. You guys are awesome!
February 14th, 2006 at 11:47 pm
Nice job on the entire Protopage endeavor. I am stuck with dial-up, and for me Protopage beats out (hands down) all of the competitors with its unobtrusive ajax. Now it can even replace the Gmail Notifier!
Well done, and thanks.
February 15th, 2006 at 2:49 am
GREAT!
thank you so much!
February 15th, 2006 at 6:27 am
Unbelievable, it works so well! You guys do a marvelous job bringing us all these nice features! I’m going to remove my Gmail Notifier at once! Thanks a lot, you incredible people!
February 15th, 2006 at 11:08 am
Great job guys, but needs a few tweaks IMO. The most important is adding the possibility to choose “new at top / new at bottom”. I want to see clearly that something new has come in, without having to scroll through the list. The other thing would be “mark as read”. This could replace the emails being displayed by a simple “total number of mails in your in-box:” I don’t need to see the read e-mails all the time.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:30 am
Now, it’s strange. I have set the displayed number of mails to 9 (preview un-ticked). I have only nine mails in my in-box (it’s a new one I’ve just set up). They seem to be mixed up, they aren’t displayed in the proper order. I want my “new at top / new at bottom” options! :-))
February 15th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
That’s great; but I would like to be sure this is perfectly secure. When I set up the email widget (after clicking on “edit”), I am asked to send my login and password over an unencrypted connection (http, not https). I don’t like this. Would it be possible to access protopage through https instead of http?
February 15th, 2006 at 5:03 pm
It would be nice if there was the option to show the number of unread emails in the panel title. Something like “Home Email Account – 2 Unread Emails”. I keep my email widgets minimized, so that way it would be easy to see if there was something there without having to mouse over them first.
February 15th, 2006 at 5:16 pm
I wonder if someone might post the instructions for accessing hotmail via pop3 – I do have a premium account, but I can’t find any support for accessing via pop3.
Many thanks.
[Saru – we thought Hotmail supported POP3 on premium accounts, but we were misinformed. If there is significant demand from people with premium Hotmail accounts, we can look into implementing webdav support. As always, please write in so that we can tally and prioritize feature requests – Protopage team]
February 15th, 2006 at 7:10 pm
pop3 isn’t possible from hotmail, but there is (unofficially free) ‘webdav’ support – protopage doesn’t support this.
quite frankly, i wouldn’t use hotmail for this reason. it’s not a real email service even when you pay for it.
[Hotmail discontinued free webdav support – otherwise we would have supported it – Protopage team]

Hi Protopage Team,
In addition to my previous praise -which I’m not backing out from- I much admit that I share the concerns some people have expressed about security of the connection. I’m not the paranoid type that thinks any mail I send or recieve is worth while for anyone else to read, but nevertheless better safe than sorry.
Also, an option to configure the sort order (oldest/newest first) and the ability to mark certain mail as read and not needing to see those anymore would indeed be a nice touch (if at all possible).
Anyway, it’s still mighty spiffy the way it is. I’m also beginning to notice how much faster this new server is. Thanks again for the good job you’re doing!

Damn I love you protopage.
February 16th, 2006 at 7:15 pm
Great new widget. I would like to be able to click on a displayed message header in the widget and it to launch my webmail page at the appropriate message – is that doable?
Regards – Martin
February 16th, 2006 at 9:01 pm
Unfortunately, opening your webmail at the message you clicked would require us to custom integrate Protopage into hundreds of different webmail systems, and in many cases is not technically possible because the feed from your POP3/IMAP inbox does not contain the necessary information to correlate it with a webmail message page.
February 16th, 2006 at 9:04 pm
If anyone is finding that their messages are not displaying in chronological order (most recent -> least recent), please do send us a message so we can investigate. Thanks.
February 17th, 2006 at 9:52 am
I don’t know how to message you, so that you are given my inbox details, but that is exactly the case, my messages aren’t displayed in chronological order.
February 17th, 2006 at 10:48 am
This is wonderful! It was easy to set up. Thanks!
February 17th, 2006 at 6:42 pm
Hmm – I liked the widget but after setting it up with Yahoo mail successfully whenever I went to my webmail viewer all messages were showing up as already read. This made it tricky to know where I was with my email so I reluctantly removed the widget from my protopage. Did I set it up wrong? Is there a way for it to check my mail without marking messages as read?
Regards – Martin

wow. protopage is getting better and better
THANK YOU

Great job! Just what I needed to speed up my life. Keep it up

I’m loving the new Email widget but I’ve noticed a strange problem with it. If I click on the emails listed, I’m taken to Gmail to login, do so fine but then instantly get taken to a Page not found screen within Gmail that tells me help/sign_out is not available? Weirder still is that I can then type gmail.com into the URL bar and I’m logged in already and can view my messages as normal. Could this be a side effect of using two email widgets, both Gmail (I use one gmail for personal and one for work)?

Is it just me?
“There has been a problem connecting to your email server with the details you have given. Please check with your email service provider for the correct details.”
My Gmail window has been working fine up until today, now all I get is the above error.
February 23rd, 2006 at 4:53 pm
Not just you, I’ve sent a bug report to the team on the problem a few hours ago.
Something screwy happening with bg images too
February 23rd, 2006 at 6:08 pm
Thanks! I’m loving Protopage!
Unfortunately, the mail widget (with gmail) worked perfectly for one day. Now I just get the same message as Daz1971.
February 24th, 2006 at 5:21 am
I think this new feature is amazing. I didn’t even know I wanted it until I had it and now I can’t imagine living without it.
I do not have Gmail. I am using Earthlink pop3 account, but I have been having trouble getting the same message as mentioned:
“There has been a problem connecting to your email server with the details you have given. Please check with your email service provider for the correct details.”

Please put a “Compose mail” and an “Inbox” button on the window!
Thank you so much!!

@Harry Dash
Then why don’t you visit some site that offers such stuff, and include feeds to said content in some Widgets?
Got to warn you, though… I believe the Protopage Team will deactivate your account as soon as they find out. A if not, I must have a very wrong perception of their policy on matters such as this.)

For this matter, once I discussed with one of my friends, not only about the content you talked about, but also to how to improve and develop, but no results. So I am deeply moved by what you said today.

Have you ever hear about the car DVR? It’s not only a high-tech product but also a recorder for your car from your driving. When you have a traffic accident with your car, it’s fortunately that you have a car DVR in you car since you can evidence to prove your innocence.

Hey Protopage… maybe I’m missing something. I would like to see all the mail in my in-box not just the new unread messages. Sometimes I open a message but I don’t act on it right away. When I’m done, I archive it.
As it is, if I read a message it disappears from protopage as if I was finished with it. Any chance we can fix this?
